Form and function has always been very important to our society. Even before electricity, running water and gas powered vehicles, our instinctive nature for creating items to sustain our basic needs with the best possible results, has been unequaled to any other species in our world. However, the need to be the biggest and the best in our endeavors is taking a toll on what once seemed an endless supply of wood from forests and natural resources that we use for plastics in our insatiable hunger for the most current of modern furniture design.
Founded in 2000, it did not take long for Dario Antonioni, founder and director of Orange22, to recognize the need for more than just another modern design manufacturer to service the private and public sector. Many prestigious artists and designers were called upon to come up with the ultimate in creativity and to provide not one, but two plans, relative to conservation of natural resources while serving the needs of mankind.
Sleek and curved, sturdy and lightweight, the Blank Canvas Project bench could manipulate alone, but this is where part two comes into play, making the project humanistic. Each designer involved has pinpointed a distinct area of concern that merits immediate attention and donates a portion of their sales, matched by Orange22. Cancer, AIDS, the environment, education and the homeless are a few of the under funded areas affecting our world’s woes and being supported by Orange22 and its design team.
Dario Antonioni is the founder and creative director of Orange22 and the driving force behind the Botanist Blank Canvas Project. Unequaled to any other program today, his group of designers begin with a blank piece of ‘green’ furniture and leave their own artistic mark of design, making it possible for anyone to own their legend. More importantly, a portion of the proceeds are donated to an organization or charity of the artist’s choosing.
Such recognized names as Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Milton Glaser and Clause Zellweger leave their individualized signature on each piece offered. Owning a work of art by these greats is not only desirable but functional, as well. Sturdy, lightweight, and environmentally friendly, the bench, coffee table or end table can grace a furniture grouping or stand alone in any home or office.
What manufacturing technologies can we leverage that create less impact or what type of new material can we use-or old material-so that we’re benefiting the environment in the best way is a question that Orange22 designers constantly ask themselves. A commitment to this line of thought plus a dedication to individual charities is what drives this company’s team to continue creating change to quality modern furniture now and in the future.
